What stood out was the depth, clarity, and honesty of the discussion.

We collectively raised serious concerns regarding the ongoing human rights situation in Bangladesh—an issue that began escalating after August 2024 under the Yunus-led interim administration and, importantly, continues under the current BNP-led government.

This is no longer confined to politicians or former Members of Parliament. The pattern has broadened significantly. Professionals, civil servants, government officials, and individuals from diverse backgrounds have increasingly been subjected to systematic persecution. In many instances, such actions appear to be driven not by conduct, but by identity—political opinion, religious belief, or minority status.

This is deeply concerning. When repression extends beyond political actors and begins to affect ordinary professionals and neutral stakeholders, it signals a structural shift—one that raises serious questions about institutional integrity and the protection of fundamental rights.

Today’s engagement ensured that these voices, experiences, and concerns were not only presented but also acknowledged at an international platform. And that acknowledgment matters.

We remain hopeful that this engagement with the Inter-Parliamentary Union marks the beginning of a sustained and meaningful dialogue. There is a shared understanding of the need to document these issues more rigorously and to work collaboratively toward accountability and the protection of fundamental human rights.

The conversation has begun. The responsibility now is to carry it forward.
